FAQ

What kind of characters may I app?

Planar Crossroads is open to canon characters, original characters, canon-based original characters, and canon alternate-universe characters.

Are there any special rules governing OCs or AUs?

We do ask that all original characters come with a fleshed out setting of decent detail so it can be linked as an available world other players can travel to. In addition, OCs will be held to more stringent personality and background sections as they will not have an easily available wikipedia link we can peruse. Canon OCs may not have any connection to actual canon characters. Canon AUs must be significantly different than their canon counterpart, both in terms of setting and characterization (as well as ideally icons) so as to be differentiated from the canon character. If an AU can be summarized as "like canon but..." it likely will not be acceptable.

I have a character that's from this canon but was raised in this other canon setting. Can I app them?

Currently we do not accept cross-canon AUs, sadly. This also includes taking characters and adapting them to settings, such as Harry Potter being from a D&D-based world, or a Homestuck troll space marine.

Can my character be from a previous game?

Right now, we do not allow for game transplants.

What happens to my powers?

All powers function normally inside the Crossroads, however their overall destructive capability is subtly abridged. Everyone should be assumed to be at about an equal level of power and should be evenly matched assuming equal skill and experience as well, and while you can still wreck buildings with your powers, you can't do anything much more cataclysmic than that.

How does death work?

Characters who are killed or die, either in the Crossroads or in their own world, are resurrected at great personal expense. If they are killed unlawfully by someone else, that person is culpable for the resurrection expense - so long as it can be proven they did it. In IC terms this means that the character may owe a lot of money and have to perform menial tasks for quite some time, or they may have a geas placed on them requiring them to perform some sort of charitable act or acquire some sort of item to pay it back.

May I app a character who is not part of a guild?

Not at this time. A lot of the game's setup is built around the ability to construct events with concurrent goals based on the various guilds. We tried to make the guilds open and numerous enough to have something for everyone, so at this time we would like all characters to be part of a guild.

Does my character have to join a guild willingly?

Not at all! The guilds are not above blackmailing people to get what they want. If you are having trouble finding justification for your character to stay with the Crossroads, you may have them end up in some form of indentured servitude to their guild. You may also decide that, for whatever reason, their world's gate is not on speaking terms with them and they just cannot find or access it. If you are doing this, just include it in the "notes" section of your application.

May I change guilds?

Absolutely! Just know that there may be some IC consequences for switching over, as it likely won't endear you much to your former guild.

May I make my own guild?

At this time we are sticking with the 6 major guilds already introduced. We may consider adding more at a later date.

How does visiting other worlds work?

Upon joining a guild, characters are given a Guild Signet which serves as, among other things, a Gate Key that lets characters visit other worlds. Gates can be any doorway or entryway within the Crossroads, and the location of gates changes constantly. You can assume that your character can, either accidentally or on purpose, find or fail to find any gate to any world that has been made available through character apps and make posts from that world. Note also that a number of gates have rather perverse senses of humor and like to be in places that are hard to reach or just plain gross, such as being in an outhouse or at the top of an extremely tall tower with no elevator.

What happens to the world when someone drops?

The world stays and remains accessible.

Can I change canon events through visiting other worlds?

No you may not. Because of the feel of the game, we do not allow characters to change the course of major events in any canon. ICly, this is extremely illegal and carries very high penalties to the perpetrators.

Can I bring things back from other worlds?

Yes you can! However, Crossroads laws tend to frown upon it and if you do it too much and without the proper permits, you can be deemed a smuggler and end up in hot water with the Knights of the Cross, so be careful.

How does time work in the Crossroads?

When in the Crossroads, or when visiting other worlds, time passes differently. Always assume that whenever you return to your home world, it is exactly how it was when you left.

I'm confused. Is this a jamjar or a free-roaming RP?

A little bit of both, actually! Characters are able to return to their own world--if the player wants them to. Because gates can be fickle, you can just as easily work it that the gate for your character's home world doesn't work for them. They can still roam about the Crossroads and other worlds, but they can't return home. We leave this in the players' hands.

How does canon updating work?

Characters can return to their home world and canon update at any time, simply post a request in the Canon Update post and we will approve it.

May I app a character who dies in canon from during or after their death?

Yes, you may! You have the option of taking them from the point of death or even after death. In the latter case, however, the character cannot return to their world directly, even if they use a gate leading to it -- they'll end up in the afterlife, instead.

My character can dimension hop. Is that allowed?

Yes and no. As a first character, no. We do ask that you have at least one active character in the game before apping someone with this ability, and even case it is a case-by-case thing. The best thing to do with that is to send a message to one of the mods or contact them through the mod plurk before considering such a character.
