The Network
Upon joining a guild, characters are given access to two things - a Guild Signet and a Smartphone.
Guild Signet
Guild Signets act as keys that allow you to enter and traverse the various gates around the Multiverse. Guild Signets are what keep you secure and in control of your abilities while in other worlds.
If in another world besides their own, characters who are not specifically trained to planeshift of their own accord will experience highly unstable abilities. Characters who have no special powers may acquire them as a result of this, but as a whole the effects are wild, dangerous, and generally difficult if not impossible to control. Those wearing a Guild Signet will experience a power alteration, where their inherent abilities are changed to be in-line with the abilities present in the world they are in. Characters who can planeshift inherently can use their abilities normally, as usual. Some characters from completely mundane worlds may also find themselves gaining access to some form of powers based on their skillsets in the mundane world they inhabit.
A Guild Signet can take a number of shapes, the most popular of which are a necklace, ring, or bracer. Guild Signets conform to the size of their user and generally fit snugly to prevent loss, but they can be stolen.
Smartphone
There are two major brands of smartphones on the market today, the Mech and the uPhone. The Mech is a popular model among people with some programming skills, it has less in the way of pre-made easily purchased apps but has a lot more flexibility and isn't so rigidly controlled by the manufacturer. The uPhone is popular among just about everybody else, it is sleek, trendy and easy to use with a slew of cheap apps to waste your time on. New guild members are issued one upon joining, and usually it's a uPhone although you can generally request a Mech if you want.
Smartphones have a number of features:
-Connectivity to the Multiverse-wide web
-Easy access to Gazetteer, the most popular social network in the multiverse. Gazetteer allows people to create their own personalized pages and network with others, as well as post regular status updates, share links, share and tag pictures, download and share applications, play games, solicit Gazetteer "friends" to join the games you play to gain extra stuff in your games, and "like" or "dislike" each other's postings. Warning: the Gazetteer privacy settings are not the best, and some guild employers will discriminate against you based on your Gazetteer postings.
-Easy access to The Pond, the most trendy and hipster of social networks. The Pond lets you send out "Ribbits," status updates of no more than 144 characters to let the multiverse know how you're doing, what your hopes and dreams are, or how hard pooping was this morning. The Pond also allows you to ping other accounts and phrases that will trend multiversally by including a hashtag before the word.
-Pre-installed Skyline, a voice and video chat program that can allow you to access large voice or video chats with other users over a very large network.
-Eunice, a voice-based AI program that can react and answer your queries about the area, about life, and about love. Eunice is always connected and can access and query the web so you always get large lists of up-to-date information. Be warned, Eunice can be a bit snarky.
-Pre-installed GPS that functions both within the Crossroads and within other worlds.
Smartphones receive power wirelessly from the main grid on the Crossroads and have backup batteries, so barring power failure on the Crossroads for several days the phones should never have any battery issues. Smartphones do not change or lose functionality no matter the world they are brought to, but travelers are advised not to be too open with them in less developed worlds.
